About Kathryn

Kathryn
Kathryn Smyth was born and raised in Cork City, and now lives with her husband and two children outside Midleton, in East Cork. This is also where she has set up her studios.

A former bank official and Irish karate champion, who has represented Ireland internationally, she has always had a huge love of art, so, in 2001, she decided to follow her heart and return to full-time education. She began her formal art education in Coláiste Stiofáin Naofa, Cork, which led to her acceptance into the Crawford College of Art and Design in 2002. From there she received her Batchelor of Fine Arts in 2006, continuing her studies to obtain an Honours degree in Fine Art in 2007.

As a student she reached the final judging stages of many national student art competitions (and was selected for exhibition in same), including the RDS awards 2005 and 2006,The Rose Project 2006, the British Art Medal Society 2004,2005 and 2006 amongst others. Following her degree show in 2007 she was also selected as part of Fledglings 2007, an exhibition in the Lavit gallery, Cork, which showcases the work of selected emerging artists.

Kathryn also creates beautiful, sculptural, jewellery pieces in silver and gold, as she loves to experiment with scale, resulting in work that, so far, ranges in size from 1cm to 4metres.

Her unique body casts are regularly commissioned to celebrate a variety of occasions, from births to christenings, birthdays, engagements and weddings, or simply as a three-dimensional family portrait – they are moments cast in time.

She has found too that her huge interest in sport and science has fed into her artwork in a major way, and has given her a much better understanding of the natural form and movement of the body, which is central to her work. It has also given her an innate appreciation of how a person’s spirit, or life force, can often override their physical attributes.

With her studio now up and running, Kathryn hopes to continue exhibiting and developing her work as a professional artist, fully focusing her energies on the path that was chosen for her. As the old saying goes, “Art is life and life is art”.
